Plan A: no win.

16 plans were positive before costs, and 4 stayed positive after the spread. Two passed the criteria set in advance, and none survived the recheck. Simply adding up all 26 plans gives +73.9% before costs and −645.3% after. The spread had a far bigger effect than the differences between methods.

HOW WE TESTEDHow we tested

  • Data: January 2022 to October 2026, historical data from one broker's demo account. 17 symbols across FX, metals, oil, stock indices and crypto, read through the MT5 Analyzer Python environment. No orders were ever placed.
  • Parameters: textbook defaults only. Nothing was tuned after seeing results.
  • Costs: the recorded spread once per round trip. Commission and swap are excluded, which flatters the trader.
  • Unit: % of capital, split evenly across the plan's symbols and sized so that one symbol's daily move is about 1% of its capital (no compounding).
  • Random comparison: 2,000 versions with the same symbol, direction and holding time, changing only the entry time.
Criteria (fixed before testing)
Positive after costs in both halves (to June 2024, from July 2024), better than random (p<.05 after multiple-testing correction), and at least 60% of symbols positive after costs. Plans that meet all three are candidates. The recheck conditions (double spread, execution one bar later) were set after the candidates appeared, before running the recheck.

Plan ONY opening range breakout

Failed recheck (on hold)

Rules: Three US indices. Follow a break of the 9:30–10:00 NY range. Stop = range width; exit at the close. M5.

Result: One of two plans that passed the criteria. It then failed the recheck, which required both halves to be positive at double spread. Break-even is about 1.3× spread, which leaves little room, and 2022 stands out in the yearly results by symbol. The pre-cost gain itself was not disproved, so this one stays “on hold”.

No win

Rules: USDJPY. Buy at 9:20 Tokyo time, exit at 9:55. Every weekday.

Result: The pre-cost gain clearly differs from random, so a time-of-day bias seems to exist. After costs it is near zero and the second half is negative: the spread takes almost all of it.

Result: Positive in every symbol and both halves, so it looks like the best plan. But buying at random with the same count and length made about the same. It simply held longs while indices rose; no turn-of-month effect was confirmed. Swap is also excluded.

BONUSBonus: the best combinations

From 371 plan-and-symbol combinations with at least 30 trades, we took the top 10 by first-half result and looked at their second half. The first-half average of +36.7% became −9.3%, and 4 of 10 stayed positive. Across all combinations, 52 were positive in both halves, but with this many tries chance alone produces some. “This method works on this symbol” is easy to say in hindsight. Figures are % with all capital on that one symbol.

LIMITSLimits of this test

  • “No win” means we could not confirm an edge in the past under these conditions. It does not prove a method can never work, and it says nothing about discretion, other parameters or other symbols.
  • These numbers come from one broker's demo account. Spreads and prices differ elsewhere.
  • Bar spread is a representative value and can be smaller than the spread you actually pay. That changed the result for plan S.
  • Bars don't show the order of moves inside them. When one bar touched both stop and target, the outcome was a coin flip.
  • The random comparison includes hours with wide spreads, which favors plans that avoid them, and it ignores clustering of trades. “Better than random” is a lenient test here.
  • Plans cover different numbers of symbols, so differences between plans are only a rough guide.
